How to Pack Dishes and Glasses for Moving

Here are some tips for packing your dishes:

Use strong boxes: Make sure to use sturdy boxes that are designed for moving. You don’t want the box to break while you’re carrying it and have your dishes end up on the ground. Make sure to tape the boxes on both the top and the bottom.

Use packing paper or bubble wrap: Wrap each dish individually with packing paper or bubble wrap to protect it during the move. This will also prevent scratches and chips. If you don’t want to splurge on packing paper or bubble wrap, you can use old newspapers — but just remember to run the dishes through the wash after you unpack since the ink can rub off on the glass.

Pack plates vertically: Instead of stacking plates on top of each other, pack them vertically in the box. This will reduce the risk of them breaking.

Use dividers for glasses: Use a cardboard glass divider to keep your glasses from touching each other. Wrap each glass individually with packing paper or bubble wrap as well.

Fill empty spaces with packing paper: To prevent items from moving around during the move, fill any empty spaces in the box with packing paper or bubble wrap.

Label the boxes: Label the boxes “Fragile” and “Kitchen” so that you know what’s inside and which boxes need to be handled with extra care.

Here are some mistakes to avoid:

Overpacking boxes: Don’t pack boxes too full, especially with heavy items like dishes. This could cause the box to break and your items to be damaged.

Using old or weak boxes: Don’t use boxes that are worn out or weak. It’s better to use new boxes or ones that are specifically designed for moving.

Not wrapping items properly: Make sure to wrap each dish and glass individually to prevent damage.

Rushing: Don’t wait until the last minute to pack. Give yourself enough time to pack everything carefully.

As for supplies, you’ll need:

Sturdy moving boxes

Packing paper or bubble wrap — newspaper in a pinch, but the ink can run off

Glass dividers (optional – but highly recommended)

Packing tape

Permanent markers

To keep calm during the move, make a checklist of everything you need to do and when you need to do it. Take breaks when you need to and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Moving can be stressful, but with careful planning and organization, you can make it a little easier.
