It’s where you’ll find the historic Coolidge Corner Theater, and the famous botched burglary from Infinite Jest.

Need Moving Permits in Brookline? You’re in luck! Brookline also happens to be the one of the easiest places around to secure parking permits for your move.

While Brookline’s overnight parking policy may ruffle a few feathers, it does have its benefits. Since the town’s parking regulations are enforced with an iron fist, the spots that are supposed to be open stay open. As a result, you can get moving permits in Brookline as late as the night before your move.

Here’s how to get the permits:

Head over to Brookline Town Hall, located at 333 Washington Street. Go up to the 4th Floor, and look for the Transportation Division of Brookline’s Department of Public Works.

It’s open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, and 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Fridays. Check the website for holiday hours.

Permits are only $10 each, and you can acquire them up to the day before your move. Unlike in other cities in towns in Massachusetts, you’ll need to post moving permits in Brookline the night before your move. You can obtain the permits at any time in the weeks leading up to your move, but you can’t post them any earlier than the night prior to your move.

Here’s how to Post the Permits:

When posting moving permits in Brookline (to meters or trees or anything along the road that is visible to all), be sure to give enough space for the truck. About forty feet should be good. Also remember that the “No Parking” signs are not your permits. The permit is a small piece of paper detailing your right from the town of Brookline to block off a parking space. The signs are bigger and should be visible from the street and from any passing vehicle. Both need to be posted. And remember to post the permits and signs securely. Unfortunately, it’s very common for signs and permits to be taken down by rain, wind, or rude neighbors.

Since Brookline doesn’t allow overnight parking, there shouldn’t be anyone in your space in the morning. If there is, you can call 617-730-2222, which is the non-emergency line of the Brookline police, to report the illegally parked car and have it removed.

Because of Brookline’s strict parking regulations, it’s rare that you’ll need to have someone towed from your permitted space. However, it’s something you should always plan for. Be sure to have yourself or someone on your behalf present in the early morning at any location for which you’ve posted a permit. If towing is necessary, it can take an hour or two to get the tow truck and police to remove the car. So it’s important to get out there early and make sure your space is protected.
