Award-Winning Somerville Moving Company Serving the City Since 2008

Safe Responsible Movers has handled moves throughout Somerville since 2008. Our Somerville movers handle apartments, condominiums, houses, offices and individual pieces of furniture in Davis Square, Union Square, Winter Hill, Spring Hill, Teele Square, East Somerville, Assembly Row and neighborhoods throughout the city.

We are rated 5 stars on Google and Yelp, maintain an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau and have been recognized by The Improper Bostonian, Boston Magazine, Banker & Tradesman and Scout Somerville.

More importantly, we understand the practical details that determine whether a Somerville move runs efficiently. That includes choosing the right crew size, reserving legal truck parking, planning for narrow stairs, confirming elevator access and identifying oversized furniture before moving day.

Somerville Moving Rates and Crew Sizes

Our standard non-peak local moving rates currently start at:

Two movers and a 16-foot truck: $179 per hour plus a $179 travel fee

Three movers and a 16-foot truck: $239 per hour plus a $239 travel fee

Four movers and a 16-foot truck: $299 per hour plus a $299 travel fee

Our moves have a two-hour labor minimum. After the minimum, labor is billed in 15-minute increments. Rates may vary for larger crews, larger trucks, peak moving dates and unusually difficult jobs.

A two-person crew may be appropriate for a studio, lightly furnished one-bedroom apartment, small in-building move or straightforward furniture delivery.

Three movers are often a better choice for a larger apartment, a third-floor triple-decker, a home with long staircases or a move involving oversized furniture. The third mover can keep furniture moving while other crew members rotate between the apartment, stairs and truck.

Larger homes and difficult apartment moves may require four or more movers. Using a larger crew can increase the hourly rate while reducing the total number of hours, especially when there are multiple flights of stairs or a long walk between the building and truck.

Accurate information about your inventory and access allows us to recommend the right crew rather than discovering on moving day that the job is larger than expected.

Somerville Moving Permits and Temporary No-Parking Signs

Truck parking should be planned before moving day. Without reserved curb space, the truck may have to park far from the building, increasing carrying time and creating unnecessary problems for the crew, customer and surrounding traffic.

A Somerville moving permit and properly posted temporary no-parking signs reserve a safe, legal and accessible parking space for the moving truck. The permit does not allow a truck to block a fire hydrant, bus stop, crosswalk, driveway or another prohibited area.

The signs must be obtained several days ahead of the move, posted at least 48 hours before the restriction begins and reported to Somerville 311 after posting.

Our Somerville moving permit guide explains the application process, sign requirements, meter fees and what to do when another vehicle remains in the reserved area.

Customers who have booked a move with Safe Responsible Movers may also ask us to obtain the permit and post the signs. Permit service must be arranged ahead of time and includes the applicable city charges and handling fees.

Apartment and Triple-Decker Movers in Somerville

A large percentage of Somerville moves involve triple-deckers, converted two-family homes and older apartment buildings. These properties frequently have narrow staircases, tight landings, low ceilings and difficult turns.

A couch, box spring or dresser that fit easily into another home may not make the turn into a third-floor Somerville apartment. Some furniture can be disassembled, but upholstered pieces and certain box springs may need a different entrance or, in limited cases, a hoist.

Let us know about:

  • Third-floor or fourth-floor walkups
  • Narrow staircases or sharp turns
  • Long exterior staircases
  • Basement or attic access
  • Oversized couches, mattresses and dressers
  • Heavy exercise equipment
  • Pianos or unusually heavy furniture
  • Long walks from the street to the entrance

Photos and measurements are helpful when access is questionable. Identifying a difficult item before moving day gives us time to recommend the correct crew, tools and approach.

Moving in Davis Square, Teele Square and West Somerville

Davis Square and the surrounding neighborhoods contain a mixture of apartment buildings, triple-deckers, condominiums and older multifamily homes. Parking near the building can be difficult, particularly near commercial areas and major intersections.

Many side streets are narrow or one-way, leaving little room for a moving truck when curb space has not been reserved. A properly planned permit can prevent the crew from parking several houses away and carrying everything down the sidewalk.

Moves near Teele Square, Powder House Square and the Somerville-Medford line may also involve steep exterior stairs, upper-floor apartments and buildings with limited driveway access.

Moving in Union Square and Spring Hill

Union Square combines older residential buildings with newer condominiums and mixed-use developments. An older walkup may require a completely different moving plan than a newer building with a loading area and elevator.

Spring Hill properties frequently include long exterior approaches, sloped streets and upper-floor units. These details matter when estimating the duration of a move. A long carry or several flights of stairs can add significantly more labor than the driving distance between addresses.

Customers moving into newer developments should confirm elevator reservations, approved moving hours, loading instructions and certificate of insurance requirements before moving day.

Assembly Row and Elevator-Building Moves

Newer buildings around Assembly Row and other recently developed parts of Somerville commonly have freight elevators, loading docks, service entrances and formal move-in procedures.

These features can make a move more efficient, but only when they have been reserved in advance. Before your move, ask management about:

  • Approved moving dates and hours
  • Freight elevator reservations
  • Loading dock reservations
  • Truck size or height restrictions
  • Certificate of insurance requirements
  • Required wall, floor and elevator protection
  • Where the crew should park and check in
  • Whether building staff must be present

Safe Responsible Movers can provide a certificate of insurance when required. Send us the building’s requirements early enough for us to prepare the correct documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions About Somerville Movers

How much do Somerville movers cost?

Our standard rates currently start at $179 per hour plus travel for two movers and a 16-foot truck. Three movers and a 16-foot truck start at $239 per hour plus travel. A two-hour labor minimum applies.

The final cost depends on crew size, total time, inventory, stairs, elevators, walking distance, parking and the distance between locations.

Do I need a moving permit in Somerville?

A permit is strongly recommended when the moving truck will need to park on a public street and the property does not have a private driveway, loading dock or designated moving area.

The permit and posted signs reserve legal curb space for the truck. They do not allow parking in an otherwise prohibited location.

Can you obtain and post the permit for me?

Permit acquisition and sign-posting service may be available for customers who have booked their move with us. This must be arranged several days before moving day.

How far ahead should I book Somerville movers?

Two weeks is a reasonable minimum for many dates. Book earlier for weekends, the beginning or end of the month, summer moves and dates near September 1.

Do you perform same-building moves?

Yes. We move customers between apartments in the same building or complex and move furniture between rooms, floors, basements, attics, garages and storage areas.

These jobs can usually be completed as labor-only moves when a truck is not needed.

Do you move rental trucks and storage containers?

We can load or unload customer-provided rental trucks, PODS, U-Pack trailers, ReloCubes and similar containers. You arrange the truck or container, and we provide the movers and equipment.

Do you perform interstate moves?

Safe Responsible Movers performs moves within Massachusetts. We can move customers between Somerville and destinations throughout the state, but we do not transport household goods across state lines.

Are Somerville movers available for September 1?

Availability near September 1 is limited and usually fills well ahead of time. Customers should confirm when they must leave their current apartment and when they are allowed to enter the new apartment.

When those times do not line up, overnight storage or a split move may be necessary.
