Important: REAL ID Is Required for Hanscom AFB Access

Every visitor age 18 or older entering Hanscom Air Force Base must present a REAL ID-compliant credential or another form of identification accepted by the installation. This requirement applies to each adult customer, guest, driver, and moving crew member who needs to enter the base.

A standard driver’s license marked “Not for Federal Identification” may not be sufficient for entry. Accepted alternatives may include a valid passport, passport card, Common Access Card, military identification, or another federally accepted credential.

Hanscom’s current installation-access guidance states that visitors 18 and older must present a REAL ID-compliant credential or equivalent. Visitors who do not already have base access may also need sponsorship and a visitor pass.

Tell Us About Base Access Before Booking

Please tell our office that your move requires access to Hanscom AFB when requesting your quote.

We need advance notice so that we can:

  • Confirm the assigned crew members have acceptable identification
  • Provide crew names when required
  • Provide moving-truck information
  • Plan for commercial vehicle screening
  • Allow additional time for gate procedures
  • Confirm that your scheduled moving date is compatible with the access arrangements

The customer is responsible for coordinating sponsorship, visitor authorization, and access to the residence. Safe Responsible Movers can provide the necessary crew and vehicle information, but we cannot issue visitor passes or guarantee that Hanscom security will admit a particular person or vehicle.

Do not wait until moving morning to arrange base access.

Missing sponsorship information, unacceptable identification, an incomplete visitor request, or commercial vehicle screening can delay the start of the move. Time spent waiting for access after our crew arrives is considered billable moving time.

Base access rules, gate procedures, and Visitor Control Center hours can change. Confirm the current requirements directly with Hanscom AFB before moving day.

Moving Trucks and Commercial Vehicle Screening

A moving truck is treated differently from an ordinary passenger vehicle.

Moving trucks entering Hanscom AFB may be required to report to the Commercial Vehicle Search Area at the Sartain Gate complex. The vehicle may be inspected before it is permitted onto the installation. Hanscom opened a dedicated commercial vehicle search area as part of its updated gate complex, and its Visitor Control Center is also located at the Sartain Gate complex.

The customer should confirm:

  • Which gate the moving truck must use
  • Whether the crew needs advance visitor authorization
  • Whether a sponsor must be present
  • What vehicle information must be submitted
  • Whether there are restrictions on weekend or holiday access
  • Whether the moving truck must arrive during specific hours

Please provide any instructions from Hanscom security to our office before the move.

Local Moving Services at Hanscom AFB

A move involving Hanscom does not always require a large interstate household-goods carrier.

You may already have the long-distance portion handled through the Defense Personal Property Program, a government-selected carrier, a rental truck, a portable storage container, or another moving company. You may still need a dependable local crew to complete one portion of the move.

Safe Responsible Movers can help with:

Moving Into Hanscom Family Housing

We can pick up your belongings from another Massachusetts address, a storage facility, temporary lodging, a rental truck, or a portable storage container and deliver them to your Hanscom residence.

Hanscom Family Housing is privatized housing managed as a residential community. Its residents include active-duty service members, members of the National Guard and Reserve, federal civil-service employees, retired military and federal employees, and Department of Defense contractors.

Moving Out of Hanscom Family Housing

We can move your belongings from Hanscom to a new home, apartment, storage facility, rental truck, or container located within Massachusetts.

For an interstate relocation, we can handle the local Massachusetts portion of the move but cannot drive your belongings across state lines.

Moving Between Hanscom and Temporary Housing

PCS schedules, housing availability, closings, leases, and household-goods delivery dates do not always line up perfectly.

We can help move your essential belongings:

  • From temporary lodging into base housing
  • From base housing into temporary lodging
  • Between an apartment and a storage unit
  • From a hotel or furnished rental into a permanent residence
  • From a Massachusetts home into a rental truck or container

We also perform multi-stop moves when belongings need to be divided between housing, storage, family members, or another local destination.

Rental-Truck and Container Loading

Some military families arrange their own transportation using a rental truck, trailer, POD, U-Box, U-Pack trailer, or portable storage container.

Our labor-only crews can:

  • Load a rental truck or trailer
  • Unload a rental truck
  • Load or unload a portable storage container
  • Move belongings into or out of storage
  • Wrap furniture with moving pads
  • Disassemble and reassemble standard furniture
  • Organize the load to use space efficiently
  • Secure items when appropriate materials are available

You provide the rental truck, trailer, or container. We provide the professional moving labor, dollies, tools, and experience.

Personally Procured Moves and Local Moving Help

A Personally Procured Move, commonly called a PPM or DITY move, allows an eligible service member to arrange some or all of the move independently rather than using only a government-arranged moving company.

Military OneSource explains that a service member completing a PPM may transport the property personally or hire and manage a moving company. The transportation office determines eligibility, documentation, weight requirements, allowable expenses, and reimbursement.

Safe Responsible Movers can provide local moving services as part of a PPM, including:

  • Local household-goods transportation within Massachusetts
  • Rental-truck loading or unloading
  • Portable container loading
  • Storage unit moves
  • Packing and unpacking
  • Moving furniture between local addresses
  • Loading belongings for an interstate carrier

We provide a written estimate and paid invoice for our services. However, we do not determine whether a move or expense qualifies for government reimbursement.

Before booking, confirm with your transportation office:

  • Whether your PPM has been approved
  • Which services are reimbursable
  • Whether certified empty and full weight tickets are required
  • What receipts and invoices must be retained
  • Whether packing materials qualify
  • Whether storage expenses qualify
  • Which deadlines and forms apply to your move

Military OneSource advises PPM customers to retain weight tickets, moving receipts, vehicle information, and other required documentation.
