How Much Do Movers Cost in Boston in 2026?
Most local Boston moving companies charge by the hour. The final cost depends on the number of movers, truck size, total moving time, inventory, stairs, elevators, walking distance, parking, packing needs, and the date of the move.
In 2026, Boston moving rates commonly range from approximately $120 to $350 per hour. Small moves using two movers and a smaller truck fall near the lower end. Larger crews, 26-foot trucks, difficult access, and peak moving dates cost more.
At Safe Responsible Movers, rates currently start at $179 per hour for two movers and a 16-foot truck, plus a flat travel fee. Rates for three movers and a 16-foot truck start at $239 per hour, plus a travel fee. Larger crews and trucks are priced according to the size and requirements of the move.
Our quotes explain the hourly rate, travel fee, minimum time, crew size, truck size, and any additional charges before you book.

What Does a Boston Move Usually Cost?
No two moves are exactly alike, but these examples show how hourly rates, moving time, and the travel fee combine.
Studio Apartment Move
A typical studio may use two movers and a 16-foot truck for approximately three to four hours.
- Hourly rate: $179
- Three to four hours of moving time: $537 to $716
- Flat travel fee: $179
- Estimated total: $716 to $895
A lightly furnished studio with easy parking and elevator access may take less time. A third-floor walk-up, long hallway, difficult parking situation, or large amount of furniture can take longer.
One-Bedroom Apartment Move
A one-bedroom apartment may require two or three movers depending on the inventory, stairs, walking distance, and size of the furniture.
Using three movers and a 16-foot truck at $239 per hour:
- Four to six hours of moving time: $956 to $1,434
- Flat travel fee: $239
- Estimated total: $1,195 to $1,673
A small one-bedroom with minimal furniture may be appropriate for two movers. A fully furnished apartment, difficult staircase, long carry, or building with strict elevator hours may require three movers.
Two-Bedroom Apartment Move
Most two-bedroom apartments require three movers. Truck size depends on the actual inventory.
Using a three-mover rate of $239 per hour:
- Six to nine hours of moving time: $1,434 to $2,151
- Flat travel fee: $239
- Estimated total: $1,673 to $2,390
A larger truck may increase the hourly rate. Packing, disassembly, multiple flights of stairs, restricted elevator reservations, and long distances between the truck and apartment can also increase the total.
Three-Bedroom Home or Larger Move
Moves involving a three-bedroom home usually require at least four movers and a larger truck. Some homes require two trucks, particularly when the move includes basement storage, outdoor furniture, exercise equipment, workshops, large book collections, or a substantial number of boxes.
Most full-house moves cost several thousand dollars. The exact price depends heavily on inventory, access, distance, crew size, truck capacity, and whether everything can be completed in one trip.
For larger moves, an accurate inventory or an in-person walkthrough is much more useful than a generic online estimate.
How Our Travel Fee Works
Every moving company has to account for the time required to travel to the origin address and return after the move. Companies handle that cost differently.
Some movers bill lot to lot. Under that system, the hourly clock starts when the truck leaves the company’s facility and continues until the truck returns. Traffic before and after the move can therefore increase the customer’s bill.
Safe Responsible Movers uses a flat travel fee instead. For most local moves, the travel fee is equal to the selected crew’s hourly rate.
The travel fee covers the crew and truck traveling from our location to the first address and returning after the job. The hourly moving clock starts when we begin working at your location and ends when the move is complete.
This makes the cost easier to understand before moving day.
Our Two-Hour Minimum
Most Safe Responsible Movers jobs have a two-hour minimum for moving labor, plus the travel fee.
For example, a job using two movers and a 16-foot truck at $179 per hour would have:
- Two-hour labor minimum: $358
- Flat travel fee: $179
- Minimum estimated charge: $537
The minimum applies even when the physical moving work takes less than two hours. The crew, truck, equipment, dispatch time, and schedule have still been reserved for the job.
Billing in 15-Minute Increments
After the minimum has been reached, we bill moving time in 15-minute increments.
You do not automatically pay for another full hour because a move runs a few minutes beyond the previous hour. If the job takes four hours and 15 minutes, you are billed for four hours and 15 minutes of moving time.
What Affects the Cost of a Boston Move?
Crew Size
Adding movers increases the hourly rate, but it may reduce the total number of hours. A three-person crew can often move significantly faster than two movers, particularly when the job involves stairs, long hallways, elevators, or a large amount of furniture.
The lowest hourly rate is not always the lowest total price.
Truck Size
A 16-foot truck works well for many studios, one-bedroom apartments, and smaller furniture moves. Larger apartments and houses may require a 26-foot truck or multiple trucks.
Choosing a truck that is too small can create a much larger expense if the crew has to make a second trip. We recommend the truck based on the inventory provided before the move.
Stairs and Building Access
Walk-up apartments generally take longer than buildings with reserved elevators and loading docks. However, elevators do not always make a move faster. Long hallways, elevator wait times, loading restrictions, and distant loading docks can add considerable time.
Important access conditions include:
- Flights of stairs
- Long hallways
- Small or slow elevators
- Required elevator reservations
- Loading dock restrictions
- Long walking distances from the truck
- Narrow doors or staircases
- Furniture requiring disassembly
Inventory and Box Count
The amount being moved is one of the strongest predictors of cost. An accurate inventory allows us to recommend the correct crew and truck.
Unreported furniture, unpacked belongings, additional boxes, basement storage, garage items, and outdoor furniture can substantially change the time and space required.
If the inventory changes before moving day, let us know so we can confirm that the original crew, truck, and rate still make sense.
Moving Date
Moving prices are generally lower during slower periods and higher during weekends, the end of the month, and the busy season from May through September.
September 1 is Boston’s busiest moving date. Truck availability, parking, building access, traffic, and rental turnovers all become more difficult. September 1 rates are substantially higher than normal rates, and availability often fills months in advance.
Customers with flexibility can often save money by moving on a weekday, in the middle of the month, or outside the summer moving season.
Boston Moving Permit Costs
A Boston moving permit is not legally required for every move, but it is strongly recommended in neighborhoods where legal truck parking is limited.
A moving permit and posted tow-zone signs reserve a legal, safe, and accessible parking space for the moving truck. This reduces the risk of the crew having to park far away, circle the neighborhood, block traffic, or work from an illegal space.
Boston currently charges:
- $69 per address for two non-metered parking spaces
- An additional $40 when two metered spaces must be reserved
You can obtain the permit and signs directly through the City of Boston. Safe Responsible Movers can also acquire and post them for you.
Our permit-handling fee is $99 per address, plus the applicable city fees.
Although a permit adds to the upfront cost, convenient legal parking can reduce the total moving time enough to save money.

How Packing Services Affect the Cost
Professional packing is normally billed according to the crew size and the number of hours required. Packing can be completed before moving day or combined with the move when the job is small enough.
Packing costs depend on:
- The number of rooms
- The number of cabinets, closets, and shelves
- Fragile kitchen items
- Artwork and decorative items
- Books and other dense belongings
- The number of packers
- Boxes and packing materials required
Safe Responsible Movers does not charge customers for the ordinary tape and stretch wrap used during a move. Boxes, packing paper, mattress bags, wardrobe boxes, and specialty packing materials may be additional.

Do Specialty Items Cost More?
Some items require additional movers, equipment, preparation, or time. These items should be disclosed before the move so we can confirm whether the scheduled crew can handle them safely.
Examples include:
- Upright and baby grand pianos
- Peloton Treads and heavy treadmills
- Large safes
- Oversized exercise equipment
- Very large stone or glass tables
- Commercial equipment
- Items requiring hoisting
- Furniture weighing more than approximately 300 pounds
A Peloton Bike may be handled as part of a normal move, but a Peloton Tread or similar treadmill may require three movers, particularly when stairs are involved.
Specialty items are reviewed individually. Any additional crew requirement or charge should be disclosed before moving day.
Possible Additional Moving Costs
When comparing Boston moving companies, ask whether the quote includes or excludes:
- Travel time or travel fees
- Fuel or mileage charges
- Tolls
- Stair charges
- Long-carry charges
- Moving blankets and equipment
- Tape and stretch wrap
- Certificates of insurance
- Heavy or oversized-item fees
- Disassembly and reassembly
- Permit acquisition and posting
Safe Responsible Movers does not add toll charges to local moving bills. Ordinary moving blankets, dollies, straps, tools, tape, and stretch wrap are included with the service.
How to Get a More Accurate Moving Estimate
The best way to receive an accurate estimate is to provide a complete inventory and clear information about both addresses.
Tell the moving company about:
- Every major piece of furniture
- Your estimated box count
- Basement, attic, garage, and outdoor items
- Stairs at both addresses
- Elevator and loading-dock reservations
- Walking distance from the truck
- Items requiring disassembly
- Heavy or specialty items
- Anything that may not fit through a normal doorway or staircase
For larger homes, complicated access, or unusual inventories, Safe Responsible Movers may recommend an in-person or video walkthrough.

Frequently Asked Questions About Boston Moving Costs
How much do Boston movers charge per hour?
Boston moving companies commonly charge approximately $120 to $350 per hour. The rate depends on the number of movers, truck size, season, date, and requirements of the move. Safe Responsible Movers currently starts at $179 per hour for two movers and a 16-foot truck, plus a travel fee.
What is the minimum cost to hire Safe Responsible Movers?
Most moves have a two-hour labor minimum plus a flat travel fee. At the starting rate of $179 per hour, the minimum estimated charge would be $537.
How does the travel fee work?
For most local moves, the flat travel fee is equal to the hourly rate for the scheduled crew. It covers travel to the first address and the crew’s return after the move. The moving clock starts when work begins at the property.
Do you bill by the full hour?
After the two-hour minimum, moving time is billed in 15-minute increments. Customers do not automatically pay for another full hour when a move runs slightly beyond the previous hour.
How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment in Boston?
A one-bedroom move may cost approximately $1,000 to $1,700, depending on the crew, total moving time, stairs, elevator access, parking, inventory, and distance. Small or unusually easy moves may cost less, while difficult or heavily furnished apartments may cost more.
How much does it cost to move a two-bedroom apartment?
A Boston two-bedroom move commonly costs approximately $1,600 to $2,500. The total depends on the amount of furniture, box count, truck size, stairs, walking distance, and time required.
Is a moving permit included?
No. Boston moving permits and tow-zone signs are separate from the hourly moving rate. The city charges $69 per address for two non-metered spaces, with an additional $40 for two metered spaces. Safe Responsible Movers can acquire and post the signs for a $99 handling fee per address, plus city fees.
Do stairs increase the cost?
Stairs increase the time and physical labor required, which can raise the total cost. Safe Responsible Movers generally does not add a separate charge simply because a normal household move has stairs, but unusually difficult access or heavy specialty items may require a larger crew.
Are packing materials included?
Ordinary tape and stretch wrap used during the move are included. Boxes, packing paper, mattress bags, wardrobe cartons, and specialty packing supplies may be charged separately.
Is tipping movers required?
No. Tipping is optional. Customers who choose to tip usually base the amount on the quality of service, difficulty of the move, length of the job, and size of the crew.
When are Boston moving rates highest?
Rates and demand are usually highest during summer, weekends, the end of the month, and especially September 1. Weekdays, mid-month dates, and winter moves are generally less expensive.
