There are plenty of places called “Norwood” throughout the English-speaking world. But if someone from Norwood, MA says the name “Norwood,” what does it sound like? It sounds like a place just south of Boston. You’ll know that without knowing anything else about Norwood. The name of the place conveys information in the way “Framingham” or “Dedham” just can’t. (It’s “o” and not the “r” that does it. Or how the “o” lands so hard yet so soft on the “r.” There’s probably a technical linguistic name for that sound, but because a human is writing this instead of a series of soulless electronic switches, we don’t have time to look it up.) The point is, the name of the town “Norwood” encapsulates a genuine regional accent in a way parking a car never could. Get it? Good.
