A very common question asked by clients is “can movers move my fridge? We’re glad you asked! We actually get asked this question quite a bit, which is why Chris Amaral, the owner of Safe Responsible Movers, made a quick video explaining what we can and can’t do.
The short answer is yes, in most cases, moving your refrigerator should pose no problem. However, as with any rule, there are exceptions and important considerations to keep in mind to ensure a a smooth move with no surprises.
Understanding Refrigerator Moving Challenges
Most standard household refrigerators can be moved without too much hassle, provided that proper precautions and steps are taken. However, certain types of refrigerators, like sub-zero models, specialty restaurant fridges, and a few other kinds, present unique challenges due to their size, built-in features, and specific handling requirements.
Sub-zero and high-end restaurant refrigerators are often larger, heavier, and contain more complex components than standard models, making them more challenging to transport. Their intricate cooling systems and sensitive calibration mean that any mishandling can lead to significant issues, requiring specialized knowledge and equipment to move them safely.
Preparation is Key
Regardless of the type of refrigerator, preparation plays a crucial role in ensuring its safe relocation. For refrigerators with active water lines, such as those with ice makers or water dispensers, it’s imperative to disconnect and drain these lines before moving. This step helps prevent water damage and leaks during the move. Movers cannot disconnect or reconnect any water line due to insurance regulations. Basically, we’re movers, not plumbers.
Make sure you measure all openings the fridge has to go through, and remove any obstacles in the way. Also, make sure the fridge can actually fit in the space alotted! Fridges come in various sizes, so your new fridge may not be able to fit in the same spot your old fridge did.
