How to book one of the Cheapest Moving Dates in the Moving Calendar
Moving is an expense no matter how you look at it. Even if you’re moving yourself, you’ll incur expenses. You’ll need to buy appropriate supplies. You’re going need to take off from work to get the the big move done. And, most likely you’ll need a truck to transport your furniture. You can avoid some of the headache by hiring professionals to do the heavy lifting for you, but that also comes with a price. Luckily, you can minimize that price by booking one of Boston’s cheapest moving dates in the calendar.
Of course, there are a few ways to reduce your moving costs. In this post, we’ll focus on getting the lowest rate possible from a local moving company. We’ve covered supplies and services for moving yourself elsewhere.
If you’re hiring a company, no matter if it’s cheap movers or expensive ones, there are four easy rules to follow when scheduling your move to ensure you get to choose from the cheapest moving dates available.
1. Book Early
Similar to booking a flight with an airline, you have a better shot at a get a good price if you book well in advance. When dates still have a good amount of open slots, you’re more likely to get a discounted rate. Once a date is packed with moves, companies will often only put more jobs into an already-busy day’s schedule if they can get a high rate. We recommend trying to book your move at least six weeks in advance. Double that to twelve weeks if you plan on moving during the summer months.
2. Avoid Peak Times
Just like flying around the holidays is more expensive because it’s the busiest time to fly, moving between Memorial Day and Labor Day will cost you more. That’s when everyone else is doing it, too. To coincide with the calendar of all of the colleges and universities in Massachusetts, most leases begin and end on September 1st of each year. Since so many leases are up towards the end of August and beginning of September, it is by far the most expensive time of year to move. The same applies to the summer in general, as well as weekends. But when it comes to September 1st, all bets are off. It doesn’t matter if 9/1 is a Saturday or a Wednesday — it’s going to have the highest moving rates of the year.
3. Avoid Holidays
Got a Monday off for a federal holiday like Columbus Day or Presidents’ Day? Congratulations! So does everyone else with a similar work schedule, and they’re also trying to move that weekend. A long weekend is just that — a long weekend. So while the “Monday” name might be an accurate one for the last day of that particular weekend, a name alone does not a weekday make.
Luckily (for this situation and this situation only), there aren’t too many of these major days off packed into a given calendar year. We talked about Memorial Day and Labor Day before. Of course, there are some non-moving holidays in the calendar. The other big ones when we see an increase in service requests are New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Birthday, Washington’s Birthday, Patriot’s Day, Columbus Day, and Veterans Day. Conversely, pretty much nobody tries to move on Superbowl Sunday. So if you’re not a football fan, you can get a nice discount by moving then. Also, many moving companies, like many other companies, are generally closed for business on Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Independence Day.
4. And, most importantly, be flexible!
Let’s say you can move “any Friday or Saturday in March.” Or maybe “any time between the 13th and 19th” works for you. Great! You’re much more likely to get a better rate than if you only have on one specific date available. Additionally, if you’re looking for the best rate, say so — there’s no harm. “I’d like the least expensive moving rate any day between the 9th and 14th,” is a perfectly normal thing to say when filling out a request for a quote. It lets us know exactly what you’re looking for. And the more information we have, the quicker we can respond, ideally with a discounted rate.
