Because of its many classic triple-decker houses seen throughout New England, Jamaica Plain is one of Boston’s most iconic neighborhoods. Because it’s the former home of Boston’s outlaw Mayor James Michael Curley, renowned poet Sylvia Plath, and South Street’s Ivy the Insurance Cat, JP is popular among those who march to their own drum circle.

Great venues like Midway Cafe and The Footlight Theater help give the neighborhood its quirky, progressive identity. The Midway hosts mid-level musical acts of all genres. The Great Outdoors

If you like your city living with lots of open space, JP is the neighborhood for you. Because it is home to Jamaica Pond, Franklin Park, Arnold Arboretum, and Forest Hills Cemetery, Jamaica Plain has plenty of open space attractions to explore.

With a surface area of 68 acres and a maximum depth of 53 feet, Jamaica Pond is Boston’s largest body of freshwater. Formerly a reservoir for much of Boston, as well as a source of ice for the Jamaica Plain Ice Company, Jamaica Pond is now a popular fishing, rowing, and sailing location for many locals.

Franklin Park, partially located in JP, is Boston’s largest park, and home to Franklin Park Zoo, a popular attraction for visitors and Bostonians alike. Arnold Arboretum is a Harvard-owned and -operated park that straddles Jamaica Plain and Roslindale. It’s a great destination for a date or a picnic, and has thousands of different tree species from all over the world.

Last but not least, Forest Hills Cemetery is the final resting place of abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison, Boston Celtics player Reggie Lewis, and the poets Anne Sexton and E.E. Cummings. It’s also a beautiful public space — and Jamaica Plain is certainly in no deficit of those.

Real Estate

Undoubtedly, JP is an expensive housing market. Builders are making very few new units, so any place you find is likely going to be older construction. You know what that means. Tight turns, narrow staircases, small windows not built to be removed. How will you get your bed in your new bedroom? Well, most likely, you won’t. Instead, if you’re moving to Jamaica Plain, you should buy a split box spring. Most of New England (and New York) should really be investing in these things.

If you’re Hungry then you should Eat

Some of JP’s best breakfast spots include Sorella’s on Centre Street as well as the famous Forest Hills Diner on Washington Street (near the cemetery). For dinner, Bella Luna has a bunch of delicious options. It’s also a music and comedy venue, and often showcases some of the area’s best local talent.

Maybe you’re looking for something a little simpler? Grab a pizza pie at Same Old Place on Centre Street. It’s a great spot for a comfort food like subs, chicken wings, and mozzarella sticks.

Getting Around in JP

Unlike its relatively isolated neighbor to the south, Jamaica Plain has great access to public transit. In fact, the neighborhood has four stops on the MBTA’s Orange Line. Jackson Square, Stony Brook, Green Street, and Forest Hills Station all offer convenient access to downtown, as well as connections to the outer suburbs via commuter rail and a host of bus routes.

However, parking in the area can be difficult, so be sure to stay up to date on the street cleaning schedules and any snow emergency notices during the winter.
