What is a COI for a moving company?
Many buildings will request a certificate of insurance from movers and other contractors in order to ensure that they have the appropriate insurance coverage to safely work in their buildings. At Safe Responsible Movers we carry Worker’s Compensation Insurance, General Liability Insurance, Cargo Insurance, and Commercial Auto Insurance. As the best movers in Boston, we’re happy to have our insurance agent prepare any certificates your building might need. However, there are some things you’ll need to know.
How to get a certificate of insurance from your moving company
In most situations, a moving company doesn’t prepare the certificates themselves ; this is usually handled by their insurance agency. If your building is requesting a certificate of insurance from your moving company, the best thing to do is put the company directly in touch with building management, so that they can provide their list of requirements for the certificates. Each building is a bit different, so it’s always best for the mover to communicate directly with the building management in order to take out the “middle man” and make sure that everyone involved has all the information needed. Once the mover has detailed information about the building’s requirements and regulations, they’ll pass that information along to their insurance agent to prepare the necessary certificates.
How far in advance to request a COI from your moving company
In short, the sooner, the better since it takes the insurance agent some time to prepare the certificate of insurance. Commercial Auto, General Liability, and Cargo Insurance can be provided within a day, but usually worker’s compensation certificates require more extensive approval from the carrier, so those can often take a few days.
What is an “additional insured”
Sometimes a building will request to be listed as an “additional insured” on the policy. This is pretty normal, and basically protects the building from any potential claims against them, enabling them to be covered under the mover’s policy according to the particulars of the situation and policy.
