For the tenth time since 2002, the City of Boston is hosting a championship-celebrating parade for one its major sports teams. As proud New Englanders, of course, we’re very happy with the result of last night’s big game. But as movers (and city residents in general), we know that such celebrations can make for a hectic day in the city.
So here’s a quick run-down of what to expect for Tomorrow’s parade:
1. Know the Route
The city announced the parade route today. It will start at 11:00 a.m. tomorrow (Tuesday, Feb. 6th) in Back Bay. The duck boats will head down Boyslton Street, make a turn onto Tremont Street, and finish up at Boston City Hall. Unless you’re heading into town to take in the parade, it’s best to avoid theses areas for the day. If you must head out to Back Bay or City Hall Plaza, try to leave as early as possible.
2. Plan Ahead
Like driving around the corner to your favorite pizza spot for your daily 11:30 lunch? Pack a brown bag for Tuesday instead. The city expects a pretty decent turnout — in fact, between 500,000 and 1 million people, regardless of Boston’s potential championship fatigue. (Also please note that Government Center station will be closed for most of the day.)
3. Avoid Driving
It may be a short route for the parade, but the traffic ramifications will go much further than Back Bay and City Hall Plaza. With a good chunk of heavily used downtown roads off-limits for a good chunk of the working day, driving should be your last resort if you need to go downtown. Use the T or the commuter rail if you can. If you must drive, be aware of parking restrictions in your city. And emotionally prepare yourself to find a ticket when you’re ready to drive home. But public transit is your friend.
4. Enjoy it While it Lasts
Ten pro championships in fifteen years is not something most cities get to experience. If you remember the hapless sports teams Boston fielded in the nineties, you know that success like this doesn’t last forever. Maybe it’s not as exciting as the first time Brady and Belichick won as 14-point underdogs, or the first Red Sox ending and 85-year curse. But even if you’re not out for the parade, if you’re a Boston sports fan, try to enjoy this while it lasts.
