When should I book a mover?
Moving is one of the most stressful experiences we all go through. Even the simple question “When should I book a mover?” can generate a stressful response. There are a multitude of tasks that must be dealt with, emotions are running high, and it’s just an all-around difficult time. Something that can make your move even more stressful than needed is waiting too long to book a moving company.
If you contact moving companies too close to your moving date, you may not be able to find a good mover who is available — if they’re good, they’re already booked. Conversely, if you contact movers too early its likely that your situation may change, which can affect pricing in ways you may not expect.
Last-Minute Moves can be tough to book.
Most moving companies are unlikely to be able to help customers calling for same day or next day service, especially during peak times like weekends and the first of the month. This is both because companies (like ours!) are quite busy, and also need some lead time to properly plan and staff a move. This is of particular concern if you have a large four-or-five-bedroom home to move. Sometimes it’s easy to squeeze in a small studio apartment move or furniture delivery on a weekday, but there are no guarantees. During the winter we often have last minute slots available, but not always.
Is there such a thing as Booking a Move Too Early? Yes. Yes, there is.
On the flip side, some folks think they’re getting ahead of the game by calling months in advance, sometimes before they have even listed their home or found a place to move to. This is far too early.
In these cases, it’s very difficult to provide a coherent and accurate estimate because your situation is fluid and likely to change. This makes it challenging to properly manage expectations for clients as well as properly staffing crews and trucks for the move. The last thing anyone wants on moving day is a surprise, so try to make sure your movers are working off of information that is accurate and up to date.
As a general point, three to six weeks is usually a good amount of time, but for moves within a few days of September 1st in Boston you’ll want to allow at least one month, preferably two.
