Why are so Many People Moving to Falmouth, MA?

Falmouth, MA: Gateway to the Cape

Now that the busiest moving season of the year has come to a close, we’re noticing (as we always do) a shift away from the student moves so common during the summer months. Instead, we’re seeing a significant increase in people moving from apartments and condos close Boston, to bigger homes outside of the city.

While this shift in clientele is common to most moving companies as we get further into the Fall, one town is a more popular moving destination than ever before — Falmouth, MA.

If you look at a map, it’s easy to see why. It’s only an hour and a half drive to both Boston and Providence. It lies along Vineyard Sound and Buzzards Bay, offering great beaches along either coast. And it offers daily ferry service from Woods Hole to hole to both Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard.

Real Estate

With an average home value of $554,900, Falmouth homes are about 57% more expensive than the Massachusetts average. But with a slightly lower population density than the rest of the state, you’ll have more space for your money in Falmouth (and you’ll be near the beach!) It’s important to remember, however, that there are many old homes in the town, so moving larger items in and out can be a little tricky. (That’s why we always recommend a split box spring!)

Beaches

Looking for a beach in Falmouth? You’ll have a hard time avoiding one. Bristol Beach and Falmouth Heights Beach provide large, family-friendly recreation spots. While Grews Pond at Goodwill Park offers a calmer, shadier freshwater swimming spot, Megansett and Manauhant Beaches have smaller, more intimate views of the Atlantic Ocean. Old Silver Beach sports a ton of room for residents and non-residents a like, while Wood Neck Beach has a much more ragged, rocky, and naturalistic ocean feel.

Transportation

While most people in Falmouth use a car to get around, there are some great public transit options during the summer. Within Falmouth, the WHOOSH open air Trolley service (only June through Labor Day) runs between Woods Hole and the Falmouth Mall. If you’re looking to explore more of the Cape, the Sealine bus service runs from Falmouth to Hyannis, where you can transfer all the way to Provincetown. If you’re looking to get off of the mainland for a bit, you can catch the ferry from Woods Hole to Martha’s Vineyard, which operates year-round.
