Hyde Park: Moving Tips and Resources

Welcome to Hyde Park, Massachusetts!

Hyde Park officially became a part of the city of Boston in 1912, and is the Massachusetts Capital’s southernmost neighborhood, as well as its newest. Some notable past and present residents include Washington Nationals relief pitcher Manny Delcarmen; Boston’s first Latino City Councillor, Felix D. Arroyo; and perhaps most famously, the city’s eleven-year mayor, the late Thomas “Mumbles” Menino.

Despite lacking a subway or “T” station, the neighborhood has three commuter rail stops. Readville, Fairmount, and Hyde Park station are all in the neighborhood, served by the Franklin and Providence/Stoughton lines. The 24, 32, 33, and 50 MBTA bus routes also connect the area to the rest of Boston.

According to Wikipedia, about 57% of the area’s residential units are home to their owners. With such a high percentage of owner-occupied units, it’s no wonder the area is such a self-contained neighborhood. (Those rates in more student-heavy areas, like Allston and Mission Hill, are much lower.)

The trend is changing, however, as the percentage of rental units has grown by over three percent in the past decade. The housing bubble bursting in 2007 and 2008 wasn’t much help either — six percent of all housing units are currently vacant. But, on the plus side, both renting and owning remain less expensive than in the rest of the city.

George Wright Golf Course

George Wright was a shortstop with the Boston Red Stocking and the Providence Greys in the late nineteenth century. He was the first batter in National League History and is now in the Baseball Hall of Fame. After baseball, he remained in New England, where he worked in the sporting goods business. Wright is also responsible for two of Boston’s earliest golf courses. The first, in Boston’s Franklin Park, is known to be the first public golf course in the United States. The second, known as “George Wright Golf Course,” is in Hyde Park.

The par-70 course was built as one of the New Deal’s famous Works Progress Administration (WPA) projects under President Franklin D. Roosevelt. It opened in 1938 and is consistently ranked as one of the country’s best courses by Golf Week and Golf Digest.

The course, located at 420 West Street, is open seven days a week from April through November, and is a very popular sledding spot during the wintertime. (With all respect to the late Mr. Wright, our favorite ballplayer remains the immortal Frank “Piano Mover” Smith.)

Entertainment options

Riverside Theatre Works is a great organization that puts on youth- and community-driven plays, as well as larger, more established productions, in Logan Square’s French Opera House. Located at 45 Fairmount Avenue, the theater offers affordable tickets to plays and musicals, as well as acting, musical, and technical training for community members of all ages.

What if you’ve got a sweet tooth? Ron’s Gourmet Ice Cream & Bowling at 1231 Hyde Park Ave. is a great spot for a date or a birthday party. You can enjoy award-winning ice cream while taking part in one of New England’s greatest pastimes, candlepin bowling.
