Boston Rentals among the Country’s Most Expensive

Tech Start-up Zumper.com ranks Boston rentals third priciest in the U.S.

Zumper, a tech company focused on using technology to streamline the process of renting or buying a home, recently ranked Boston rentals as among the most expensive in the United States. Boston was ranked third, while San Francisco and New York City were first and second, respectively. Rounding out the top five were two other Bay Area cities, San Jose and Oakland.

But is it worth the price?

While the Boston metro area is one of the costlier areas in which to rent, the city and surrounding towns have no shortage of perks. With a low crime rate, higher wages than most places in the country, and perhaps the best public schools in the nation, it’s no wonder some people think it’s worth shelling out an extra few hundred bucks a month to live in Boston.

In fact, another recent survey found five Massachusetts towns to be among the nation’s smartest.

The Zumper survey listed Downtown, D Street in South Boston, and Cambridgeport as the priciest neighborhoods for renters. Mission Hill, Allston, and East Somerville, on the other hand, had the most affordable rental units available. Places like Inman Square and Coolidge Corner were closer to the middle of the pack.

They weren’t listed on the survey, but we think Natick and Westwood are great options if you’re looking to move. Both are easily accessible by train or car. And, like many cities and towns in Massachusetts, both towns boast excellent schools and a low crime rate.
